Campaign for Congressional Hearings: Urge your rep to sponsor congressional hearings!
Here in California IndependentVoice.Org has been one of the key forces passing reforms that open up our political process and empower voters – particularly independents. Because of recent ballot victories, next year California's election system will be radically different and the politicians will actually need our votes to get elected. And that puts us in a very powerful position.
However, in many states across the country independents are treated as second class citizens when it comes to political participation. Often these barriers are so accepted as part of the electoral system that they go unnoticed. Independents in many states are locked out of partisan primaries, packed into gerrymandered districts where their votes can't have an impact, and prohibited from even serving as poll workers.
We're calling on Congress to hold hearings on the status of independent voters – the largest group of voters in the country. Independents are a new force in American politics but face structural barriers that block our full democratic participation. Often these barriers are so accepted as part of the electoral system that they go unnoticed.
Congressional hearings would shine a light on these inequities and go a long way to revitalizing our democracy and reducing partisanship.

Coming Soon: Independents Rock California 2012
The dramatic reforms passed in 2010 will create a brand new election process in 2012. Voters, instead of the party insiders, will have the power. And we intend to use it to rock California in 2012. We're organizing teams of independents across California to screen the candidates running for office. We're looking to hear more than the same old party talking points – we're going to demand that they listen to ours if they want our support. Then we'll endorse the candidates who pledge to fight for reform and get out the word to all the independent voters in that district. Help by joining a local organizing team and organize other independent voters by holding a house party, doing a voter outreach shift, or making a contribution.
